This work by Chinese artist Xu Zhen (徐震) is based on the bronze statue of Artemision. This statue from 460 BC was found in a Roman shipwreck on the seabed near the Cape of Artemision, off the coast of Greece. Xu Zhen copied the ancient sculpture and placed several Peking ducks, a Chinese specialty, on the arms of the statue. Peking duck became popular in the 14th century when it was considered the favourite dish of the Chinese imperial court. Since then, it has been a national symbol representing Chinese culture at diplomatic dinners.
Xu Zhen combines two elements from Western and Eastern culture in his sculpture. He acknowledges that in real life there is some reluctance in the exchanges between China and Europe, perhaps caused by cultural prejudices and the fact that each party interprets history in its own way. Xu Zhen reflects on the development of a culture and civilization based on mythology and argues that historical interpretations are not as decisive as is often assumed.
This work is part of “The Eternity Series,” a collection of sculptures that mix Eastern and Western historical artifacts.
