The Weight of Memory - a photo on Flickriver

On a stormy Saturday when the thunder, lightning, wind, and rain are conspiring to keep me off the hiking trails, I thought I would share one of my favorite moments from my summer trip to Hawai'i. 

I photographed sunset almost every evening I was there, and this night was no exception. I was mainly shooting over the water and watching as the sun slipped into a soft bank of clouds on the horizon, when for some reason I turned around. My eyes widened as I saw the skies over Mauna Kea and the surrounding mountains adorned in the most beautiful shades of pink, and I hastily started taking some photos. While skirting the edge of the golf course to try get a better angle on the mountain, I spotted the near-full moon rising over its slopes, and it became one of those special moments that remain etched in memory forever. 

And one of those times that all too quickly fades from moment into memory. Within a few minutes the colors had vanished from the sky, the moon was enshrouded in the layers of clouds, and only the photos remind me it wasn't a dream.
