River Avon below Avon Dam, Dartmoor. Rising on the high moors of Dartmoor, the River Avon (sometimes called the River Aune) begins its journey just north of Ryder’s Hill before being impounded at Avon Dam, completed in 1957 to provide water for South Devon. Flowing out from the foot of the dam, the Avon cuts a lively course through oak woodlands and steep-sided valleys, its clear waters rushing towards Shipley Bridge. The river here is a favourite with walkers following the scenic track from the dam, offering views of tumbling cascades and tranquil pools set against the granite and heather of southern Dartmoor.

From the dam, the Avon winds south through South Brent, Aveton Gifford and out to the English Channel at Bigbury-on-Sea. Historically, the valley supported medieval settlements and later small-scale industry, including tinners and millers, while today the river and its catchment are protected as part of Dartmoor’s conservation landscape. Managed by South West Lakes Trust and Dartmoor National Park, the stretch below the dam is popular for wildlife watching, particularly dippers, wagtails and moorland flora that thrive in the clean upland waters.
