Large Copper (Lycaena dispar rutilus) male (In Explore) 7

            Bumble Hole NR, Dudley, West Midlands, England 

The colour of this butterfly is incredible – almost florescent in the sunlight. This sub species of Large Copper is normally found in central Europe and a small population of this delightful butterfly has appeared at this reserve. This is an unofficial introduction, but their food plant, Water Dock, grows there and pairs have mated and eggs have been found. Our own sub species is now extinct.
