Gulosus aristotelis - a photo on Flickriver

            Today I bring you this photo of a european shag I found resting peacefully on some rocks. To be honest, I approached it without much hope, thinking it would fly away as soon as it saw me. But to my surprise, the opposite happened: it stayed still and allowed me to get very close, almost as if it were posing for the camera.

This specimen was a juvenile, which can be distinguished by its brown plumage, unlike the intense black plumage of adults. They are water birds that feed mainly on fish, although they can also eat crustaceans.

What impressed me most was that, when it got tired of posing, it started fishing in a nearby pool... And it came within a metre of me! It was a very special moment.
