D7628 Sybilla

            BR Green liveried Class 25/3 D7628 'Sybilla' passes Water Ark, Darnholm on 24th April 2010 with a Whitby to Pickering train

D7628 was built at Beyer Peacock of Manchester, Works number BP8038 of 1965. Delivered to British Railways Tinsley depot, and after a brief period at nearby Wath she settled into a London Midland career until withdrawal. In 1973 under TOPS she became 25278.

An uneventful life followed, a highlight being the working of the Royal Train between Shrewsbury and Aberdovy and Rossett on November 25th and 26th 1982. 12th July 1985 will live long in Rat basher's memories when she worked 1V46 York to Cardiff Central relief throughout. As the end loomed she received the unofficial name  'Castell Powys/Powis Castle'.

Her last day of operation was 17th March 1987, being stored in Basford Hall Yard, Crewe. Movement to Vic Berry of Leicester came on 8th July 1987 along with 25191, 25212 and 25313. Sale to Jos de Crau came later that year, along with 25191. Both locomotives left on 25th January 1988 for a new home at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Both 25's became useful, reliable engines for the railway, and 25278 was repainted BR Two-Tone Green and named 'Sybilla', becoming D7628. Sister 25191 was repainted BR Green and named 'The Diana', becoming D7541.

TPWS was fitted in 2007 and after tests and some Pickering to Whitby trains, D7628 set sail solo on 6th October 2007 with 'The Rat Ressurection' railtour from Pickering to Battersby. She became the first Class 25 to run on the National Network since 1990, and is a regular on the line today.
