Dead wood covered with fungi - a photo on Flickriver

            People use the word polypore for many mushrooms that grow on wood and sit like small shelves on a trunk. The underside has tiny pores instead of gills. They break down dead or weakened wood and return nutrients to the forest. Calocera is not a polypore. It is a genus of bright yellow jelly like mushrooms that are often finger shaped and found on dead wood. You can spot both on fallen logs and they play an important role in wood decay.
