On 12th April 1533, Anne Boleyn was presented to the court, and the entire realm, as queen. Her status as Henry VIII’s legitimate wife was strengthened by her coronation on 1 June and, in the following year, an Act of Succession that declared her issue by the King to be the legal heirs to the throne.

Anne’s badge – the crowned white falcon with Tudor roses growing from a tree stump – was swiftly placed in prominent areas, especially the royal palaces. It also appeared on sumptuous items commissioned by Henry, and even by Anne herself. For New Year 1534, Anne gave Henry a magnificent table fountain devised by Holbein. This may be an early design for it. The description of the item in the 1534 New Year’s Gift list states:

‘A goodly gilt basin, having a rail or board of gold in the midst of the brim, garnished with rubies and pearls, wherein standeth a fountain, also having a rail of gold about it garnished with diamonds, out whereof issueth water at the teats of three naked women standing about the foot of the same fountain’.

Anne’s badge can be seen in the left side of the fountain.
