Tomar - Festa dos Tabuleiros - Cortejo do Mordomo

            A Festa dos Tabuleiros ou Festa do Espírito Santo é a celebração mais importante da cidade de Tomar, Portugal, que se realiza de 4 em 4 anos. É uma das festas mais antigas de Portugal, remontando às festas do Espírito Santo. Têm também a ver com práticas ancestrais de entrega das primeiras colheitas à Deusa Ceres e celebração da fertilidade da terra. Estas festividades culminam com o Cortejo dos Tabuleiros, em que cada rapariga, acompanhada por um rapaz, traz um tabuleiro decorado com flores e pão (comemorando a primavera e a abundância).
Era costume que o Mordomo comprasse seis (ou mais) bois, que seriam posteriormente abatidos, para que a sua carne fosse distribuida, no final da Festa, aos mais pobres. Esses bois, enfeitados, entravam na cidade escoltados pelos membros da Comissão organizadora da Festa, a cavalo.

The Festa dos Tabuleiros or Festa do Espírito Santo is the most important celebration in the city of Tomar, Portugal, which takes place every 4 years. It is one of the oldest festivities in Portugal, dating back to the festivities of Espírito Santo. They also have to do with ancestral practices of delivering the first harvests to the Goddess Ceres and celebrating the fertility of the land. These festivities culminate in the Cortejo dos Tabuleiros, in which each girl, accompanied by a boy, brings a tray decorated with flowers and bread (celebrating spring and abundance).
It was customary for the Butler (Mordomo) to buy six (or more) oxen, which would later be slaughtered, so that their meat could be distributed, at the end of the Festival, to the poorest. These oxen, decorated, entered the city escorted by the members of the Organizing Committee of the Festival, on horseback.
