Cat o'nine tails, Hyde Park Barracks Sydney Australia

            The cat o'nine tails was rather a brutal kind of discipline for convicts who acted up.  There were 9 ropes attached to the whip with notes along it.  At the Hyde Park Barracks the convicts could not receive more than 100 lashs.  At places such as Norfolk Island the convicts could receive upto 200 lashes!!!  The cat o'nine tails was soaked in salted water first which aided in the pain that the convict suffered but also helped in the healing of the wounds.
