The Cooktown Trip (Group 4) - Barringtonia acutangula (Freshwater Mangrove) Stream Barringtonia

            These trees were growing at the McLeod River and was in flower when I was there which I think is fortunate.  It grows along the margins of waterways and is flowering leading into summer, easily recognised by the trailing red buds or flowers.  The tree can be deciduous but the ones I saw all had their leaves.  Maximum height is 8 metres and the flowers can attract bats, moths, honeyeaters and lorikeets.  It grows from lowlands to 450 metres in favoured gallery rainforest and beside swamps and flood plains.

Flowers are pink to red with a green calyx and produce a ribbed fruit from Jan to May and these can be seen along waterways.  The larger related variety produces strange 4 cornered shaped box-like fruits that can be found sometimes washed up on beaches.  The seeds held inside the fruits are toxic to humans.

This tree is also called The Freshwater Mangrove and is found on Cape York to Hinchinbrook Island near Ingham and in the Northern Territory and in SE Asia to India.  Aborigines used the plant as a fish poison.  The seeds are analgesic and contain saponins and the bark produces an antimicrobial agent.
