1964 Pontiac GTO Royal Bobcat - a photo on Flickriver

1964 Pontiac GTO Royal Bobcat

            My buddy Patrick called while I was at the show and pointed me to this well-loved and well-used '64 GTO. I learned from him that it was modified by Royal Pontiac, a Detroit area dealer that specialized in putting production Pontiacs on steroids.

I'm wondering if the meticulously stitched American-flag vinyl top, with its sprayed on, stenciled stars, was actually done in '64, or whether it was added much later. I'm old enough to remember 1964, the last gasp of '50's mores and attitudes. College campuses were quiet. Woodstock was five years in the future. Long hair on guys was an invitation to a school suspension or a reprimand from the boss. "My country, right or wrong" patriotism was the order of the day. Any use of American flag motifs was taken very seriously well into the '60's, and the original owner of this car would have been an instant target of the police even if he drove under the speed limit everywhere he went.

This has more of the flavor of "Easy Rider", which came along 5 years later and starred a chopper with a similar flag painted on its gas tank. But if it was done in '64, it anticipates the Mopar floral "Mod-Top" vinyl roofs, the houndstooth roofs on early '70's Mustangs and Cougars, and the faux-alligator roofs on mid-'70's Plymouth Gold Dusters.
