Viscacha - a photo on Flickriver

Viscacha

            Northern Viscacha (Lagidium peruanum) - Cordillera Vilcanota, Peru

After almost 5 months of working in South America, first in the lowlands then 2.5 months high in the Andes working with the highest elevation amphibians in the world, I have multitudes of images to share!  I thought this would be a good one to start with as the viscacha might be the cutest of all the animals I saw during the entire time.  Quite common in rocky parts of the Cordillera vilcanota they almost seem like a conglomeration of other better known animals: a squirrel, rabbit, kangaroo hybrid.  They are infact rodents and the closest relatives to the viscachas are chinchillas.
