Benign moorings?

            This is the view of Schulz Canal where it flows into Moreton Bay (Brisbane, Queensland) at Nudgee Beach in the northern suburbs. It appears to be a very benign waterway having started off and flowed most of its distance through the suburbs as Kedron Brook. In the 1980's expansion of Brisbane Airport, Kedron Brook was rerouted as the canal through the wetlands of the bay, cutting off the old suburb of Cribb Island where the brothers Gibb once lived and annihilating it as part of the expanded airport. Last year, a second main runway was also opened at the airport on the masses of land involved in this massive project. 

While it looks benign, the whole system gets well and truly full when flooding occurs. In fact, during the Brisbane floods early this year (2022), the flooding was so severe upstream that the large Toombul Shopping Centre was inundated and as a result, it has been closed and will be demolished and replaced by some new, hopefully flood proof development in the years ahead. While it hasn't been identified officially as such, the destruction of this shopping centre may well be one of the largest single property losses by flood in Australia's history. Not a great record for what is essentially a fairly minor suburban stream. A number of yachts were also destroyed in the moorings at the location in the shot.

"Schulz Canal is an artificial waterway in Nundah, Queensland that enters Moreton Bay. There are tributaries that enter the short canal, draining the suburbs of Hendra and Wooloowin in Brisbane's north east.

It was originally constructed in the early 20th century, and was named after William Schulz, an alderman on the Toombul shire council at the time.

Today the canal begins in Kedron at the end of the Kedron Brook. Beyond the Toombul Shopping Centre carpark the Kedron Brook Floodway acts a main water diversion for waters away from the Brisbane Airport terminals via Nudgee towards the Boondall Wetlands park." Wikipedia
