To Microstock or not to Microstock? - a photo on Flickriver

Lately I’ve been experimenting with Microstock, studying the market and seeing what kind of photos that sell and which do not. I’ve never really given it any thought before, but I’ve started to realize that the people who are good at this are awesome photographers who have been able to adapt their work into a genre that sells. It’s actually a bit of a bruise to your ego when you realize how many good photographers are out there selling their photos like this and how many are competing for the downloads. Also image quality is at a level that I simply haven’t bothered to look at before.

The thought of making money from my photographs more than the occasional one that I sell to a newspaper or advertisement is appealing to say the least! Also having been away from home 15 months now traveling the world, I to start to realize that you need money to do what I do ; ) 

Irina was a Russian girl that I was diving with and I asked her if she’d model for me to do a series of beach photos of and together with props such as computers etc. I think it must be an inbuilt talent of Russians because I’ve met Russians before who just naturally pose. This girl was absolutely wild! She loved being in front of the camera, and for the first time ever I managed to totally fill all of my CF-cards in one shoot, and in the end I wished I had another one to slide in! We started of at her hotel room and then made our way down through some nice chairs to a beach hotel with a swing and ended up trashing her dress in the water which was so much fun! I’ve never met anyone who loved being photographed this much before and it really made me wonder how much fun it must be to shoot professional models! 

This is a whole new style for me and figuring out what photos sell and which don’t in a competitive market sure is a challenge. I’m learning and finding it incredibly fun, so if there are any other microstockers out there please drop me a note and we can learn from each other.
