Samarkand, The Registan - a photo on Flickriver

            The Registan in the centre of Samarqand, the heart of the trading routes known collectively as "The Silk Road". Silk was a late comer to the trade system which probably started with spices, vegetables and furs going north south, as well as east west. It was a corridor for ideas as well as trade. Its how rhubarb got to Europe!
