The baby snow leopard was born June 13, 2013. The young male is called Schan and his mother is Dari.
The snow leopard (Panthera uncia or Uncia uncia) is a moderately large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central Asia. 
They occupy alpine and subalpine areas generally 2,500 to 6,500 metres above sea level. 
The total wild population of the snow leopard is estimated at 3,000 to 6,000 individuals. The snow leopard is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as globally Endangered. There are also approximately 500 snow leopards in zoos around the world.
Snow leopards are slightly smaller than the other big cats but, like them, exhibit a range of sizes, generally weighing between 27 and 55 kg, with an occasional large male reaching 75 kg and small female of under 25 kg. They have a relatively short body, measuring in length from the head to the base of the tail 75 to 130 cm. However, the tail is quite long, at 80 to 100 cm, with only the domestic-cat-sized marbled cat being relatively longer-tailed. They are stocky and short-legged big cats, standing about 60 cm at the shoulder.
Snow leopards have long, thick fur, and their base colour varies from smoky gray to yellowish tan, with whitish underparts. They have dark grey to black open rosettes on their bodies, with small spots of the same color on their heads and larger spots on their legs and tails. Unusually among cats, their eyes are pale green or grey in colour.
Snow leopards are carnivores and actively hunt their prey. Like many cats, they are also opportunistic feeders, eating whatever meat they can find, including carrion and domestic livestock. They can kill animals more than three to four times their own weight.

De sneeuwpanter, sneeuwluipaard of irbis (Panthera uncia, synoniem Uncia uncia) is een met uitsterven bedreigde soort uit de familie der katachtigen (Felidae). De sneeuwpanter leeft in het Himalaja-gebergte en de uitlopers ervan in centraal Azië. Het dier voelt zich heel goed thuis op hoogten van 2500 tot 6500 meter; 's winter wat lager en zomers wat hoger. De sneeuwpanter is een bijna mythisch dier. Dit zeldzame roofdier wordt zelfs door de lokale bevolking zelden of nooit gezien, maar pootafdrukken bewijzen zijn aanwezigheid. 
's Nachts houdt hij zich schuil in een hol dat enige bescherming biedt tegen de kou. Vooral tijdens de schemering van de vroege ochtend en de late namiddag jaagt de sneeuwpanter op grote maar ook kleinere dieren. Hij besluipt zijn prooi en werpt zich er dan op met een enorme sprong (tot 15 meter ver of 8  meter hoog). 
De sneeuwpanter heeft een stevige wat gedrongen bouw met een brede borstkas en is zeer goed aangepast op het leven in koude streken. De vacht van de sneeuwpanter is lichtgrijs en neigt soms iets naar geel. Hij heeft zwarte vlekken op zijn lijf. De vacht is dik en zijdezacht en de ronde kop is relatief klein. Zijn lichaamslengte ligt tussen 1 en 1,30 meter. Zijn staart is 80 centimeter tot 1 meter en de schofthoogte is circa 60 centimeter. Zijn gewicht ligt tussen de 25 en 75 kilo.
De sneeuwpanter kan men van andere panters onderscheiden doordat hij kleiner is, en doordat zijn staart relatief langer is. Deze staart helpt hem om zijn evenwicht te bewaren bij de sprongen die hij maakt over de vaak diepe kloven in het bergachtige gebied waarin hij woont. Hij gebruikt hem ook om zijn neus en bek te beschermen als het erg koud is. Zijn grote harige poten functioneren als sneeuwschoenen, zoals die van de lynx.
Er wordt verondersteld dat de sneeuwpanter net als de tijger over het algemeen solitair leeft, maar niet totaal solitair. Ze paren alleen gedurende het paringsseizoen als koppels in elkaars woongebied komen.
Sneeuwluipaarden of sneeuwpanters worden in geen enkel Nederlands dierenpark gehouden.
