Tulip Time

            The early-blooming (late March and April in Holland) double peony tulips “Cardinal Mindszenty” (white/near white flower) and “Monte Carlo” (yellow flower) attract attention every time. Peony-flowering tulips are noted for their large double flowers that resemble old-fashioned peonies.

Of all the bulbous plants, the tulip is without a doubt the most popular. Tulips are grown on an extremely large scale, especially in Holland (the Netherlands) where their history goes back to the end of the sixteenth century. That was when the first tulips were noticed growing in the vicinity of Leiden. Now, more than 400 years later, billions of tulips are being cultivated, the vast majority of them being exported from Holland. Now there are more than 3,000 cultivated varieties registered.

De vroegbloeiende (eind maart en april in Nederland) dubbele pioentulpen "Kardinaal Mindszenty" (wit / cremewitte bloem) en "Monte Carlo" (gele bloem) trekken altijd aandacht. Pioentulpen staan bekend om hun grote dubbele bloemen die lijken op ouderwetse pioenrozen.

Van alle bolgewassen is de tulp is zonder twijfel de meest populaire. Tulpen worden op zeer grote schaal geteeld, vooral in Nederland, waar de geschiedenis teruggaat tot het einde van de zestiende eeuw. De eerste tulpen afkomstig uit het Midden-Oosten groeiden daar toen in de omgeving van Leiden. Nu, meer dan 400 jaar later worden er in de Bollenstreek nog miljarden tulpen geteeld. Het grootste deel is bestemd voor de export. Nu zijn er meer dan 3.000 gekweekte variëteiten geregistreerd.__________________________________________________________________________________
