The serval (Leptailurus serval) is a medium-sized African wild cat, that is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, mainly in covered areas that are close to water. Individuals are more usually found in mountainous areas at elevations up to 3,000 m. 
Although the serval is not considered to be at any great risk in the wild, they are being subjected to increasing levels of the loss of their wetland habitats which has led to population declines in certain areas along with having been extensively hunted for their fur. 
The serval has yellowish, orange or copper colored fur that is covered with both dark spots and stripes, that helps to camouflage the Serval into the long grass. The head-body length ranges from 60-100 cm, relatively short tail from 25-40 cm, height at shoulder from 50-65 cm, and body-weight from 8-18 kg. The females are usually smaller than males.
The Serval is one of the most distinctive felines on the African continent with its spotted fur and long limbs giving it the appearance of a small Cheetah. Servals have excellent smell, sight and hearing which helps them to detect prey both in the long grass and even underground, with their large and rounded ears being able to rotate independently to pinpoint small animals close-by. 
Servals primarily hunt rats, hares, reptiles and other small rodents along with fish and frogs in the water, large insects and small birds, which they are able to catch both on the ground and by leaping into the air. The serval is most active from dusk to dawn, but will sometimes hunt during the day, particularly when the weather is cool or overcast.

De serval (Leptailurus serval of Felis serval) is een middelgrote katachtige die zuidelijk van de Afrikaanse Sahara leeft. De serval wordt voornamelijk aangetroffen in savannes en open graslanden, maar ook in open bossen, langs de bosrand, in bergheidegebieden en in rietvelden rond moerassen. Hij leeft voornamelijk in gebieden met hoger gras en altijd in de buurt van water. 
De serval heeft zeer lange poten (relatief de langste poten van alle katachtigen en lijkt daardoor enigszins een kleine Cheetah), een kort staartje, lange nek en een kleine kop met grote, afgeronde oren en een korte snuit. De vacht is geel- of oranjebruin van kleur, met een onregelmatige tekening van zwarte strepen en vlekken. De kop-romplengte is 60 à 100  cm, de relatief korte staart is 25 à 40 cm, de schofthoogte is 50 à 65 cm, en het lichaamsgewicht is 8 à 18 kg. De vrouwtjes zijn meestal kleiner dan de mannetjes. 
Een serval is geen moeilijke eter en heeft een uitgebreide menukaart. Ze jagen onder andere op kleine zoogdieren (knaagdieren), hagedissen en vogels, maar heeft ook geen problemen met slangen, vissen, kikkers en verschillende insecten. Er worden zelfs vruchten gegeten als er niets beters in de buurt is.
De serval is een schitterende jager, met hun grote oren vangen ze diverse geluiden op die prooien zowel boven als onder de grond maken. Nadat een prooi gelokaliseerd is, vallen ze met enorme sprongen aan. Zelfs het jagen op een vogel is voor een serval een kleine moeite. Met een enorme aanloop springen ze naar een vogel en vangen ze zelfs uit de lucht. Ook ondergrondse prooien zijn niet veilig en worden moeiteloos opgegraven. De serval is het meest actief van zonsondergang tot zonsopgang, maar zal soms overdag jagen wanneer het weer koel of bewolkt is.
