Hyacinth macaws

            The hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), or more commonly called the blue macaw is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. 
With a length (from the top of its head to the tip of its long pointed tail) of about 100 cm it is longer than any other species of parrot; and it weighs 1.2–1.7 kg.
Habitat loss and the trapping of wild birds for the pet trade have taken a heavy toll on their population in the wild, so the species is classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.

De hyacinthara, blauwe ara of Zuid-Amerikaanse ara (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is een papegaai van het geslacht van de blauwe ara's (Anodorhynchus). 
De ara is de grootste vliegende papegaaiensoort met een lengte van 90 à 100 cm en een gewicht van circa anderhalve kilo. 
Ze hebben een diepe kobaltblauwe kleur, met gele ringen om hun ogen en ondersnavel. Ze eten vooral zaden en diverse fruitsoorten. 
Deze papegaai leeft in de regenwouden van het oostelijk deel van het Amazonegebied in vooral Brazilië, Bolivia en Paraguay. 
De aantallen van wilde populaties nemen sinds de jaren 1990 in snel tempo af door illegale vangsten en door aantasting van het leefgebied. Op de internationale Rode Lijst van de IUCN staat deze papagaai momenteel als kwetsbaar.
