Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, Yosemite National Park

Yes, this reservoir is in Yosemite National Park and it has an interesting history. When Yosemite was made into a park this area was supposed to be preserved like the rest of Yosemite. But in the early 1900's, San Francisco was in dire need of a stable and abundant water supply. They were given permission to put a dam in this pristine valley to fulfill that need. John Muir lead a group of conservationists that tried to block this area from being developed, but he was unsuccessful. This area would have been as beautiful a sight to see as Yosemite Valley. It is still a fantastic view, but you don't get to see the valley now. If you want to read more about the history check out this link.

The waterfall on the left is called Tueeulala Falls and the one on the right is Wapama Falls. The snow melt made both of the falls really flow this year. You are allowed to walk across the dam here to a trail that leads to both of the waterfalls. You pass through a tunnel and then follow a trail along the reservoir to both of the falls. We didn't try the hike on this trip, but I want to come back when we have more time and check it out. This area is open year round and is visited much less than Yosemite Valley. If you want to visit and get away from the huge crowds, this is an ideal location to visit. It is a little out of the way and off the regular pathway to Yosemite, but it is worth checking out.
