Malachi Celebrates International Read a Faerie Tale Day 2022

            DADDY:  “Good.  It’s time to settle down with my cup of tea and finish reading my faerie tale.”  *Pauses.*  “Goodness Malachi!  What are you doing?”

MALACHI:  “I should have thought that was obvious, Daddy!  I’m enjoying a little read of ‘Puss in Boots’ for International Read a Faerie Tale Day.”

DADDY:  “Yes, I can see that.  My real question is why are you sitting on top of my 1880 copy of ‘The Three Princesses’ (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella), Malachi?”

MALACHI:  “Well, it seemed to me to be a capital place to read a few books of faerie tales.  Antique paper is so much softer on a little bear’s derrière!  Why do you ask, Daddy?”

DADDY:  “Well, I was part way through the story of Cinderella, which I was reading for International Read a Faerie Tale Day.”

MALACHI:  “And here I was, thinking you had left it out, just for me to make myself comfortable on, Daddy.”

DADDY:  “I’m afraid not, Malachi.  Now, may I please have my book?”

MALACHI:  “I’m afraid not, Daddy.”

DADDY:  “Whyever not, Malachi?”

MALACHI:  “Well, I’ve just sat down to read and you see, I have quite a few more books yet to read.  I’m afraid that you will simply have to be patient.” 

DADDY:  “But I’m not entirely sure that I want to be patient, Malachi.”

MALACHI:  “Oh, Daddy!  You have hundreds of editions of Cinderella!  I’m sure you could find another one to read for “International Read a Faerie Tale Day’!”

DADDY:  “Oh very well, Malachi.  I suppose I shall have to.”  *Pauses.*  “You aren’t going to be finished reading any time soon, are you?

MALACHI:  “No, Daddy?”  *Shakes head seriously.*  “I have quite a bit of reading to catch up on.”

DADDY:  “Oh well, I best get another book then.”

MALACHI:  “Well done Daddy!  I knew you would see things my way… eventually.”

Fairy tales are a genre of literature that features fantastical and magical characters.  Usually in the form of short stories with fairies, elves, trolls, and witches as central characters, fairy tales are set in a magical world with events that take place "once upon a time."  A form of folk tales, fairy tales have a strong oral and written tradition all around the world - with cultures adopting whole or parts of tales from other cultures.  Before the Seventeenth Century, fairy tales often had themes unsuitable for the children of today and were written mostly as cautionary tales for children to learn from as they grew up, and to remind adults how best to behave.

Today, fairy tales are considered to be a genre of children's literature and the term fairy tale is used to refer to happy events and happenings, such as a fairy tale romance or a fairy tale ending.  By celebrating ‘International Read A Fairy Tale Day’, you’ll be continuing the magical tradition that has ensured fairy tales are still very much part of our lives to this day.

Malachi I acquired in mid-March 2020 (and mid Coronavirus) from a wonderful Melbourne stalwart toy shop: Dafel Dolls and Bears, when I went looking for a present for one of my goddaughters.  Malachi is designed by Mary and hand-made by Wendy Joy in Australia.  He has articulated arms and legs, and an extremely sweet face.  Malachi was the name he came with, written by hand on his little tag.

Malachi is reading a 1:12 size miniature book of Puss in Boots made by the British miniature artisan Ken Blythe.  Most of the books I own that he has made may be opened to reveal authentic printed interiors.  This Victorian era miniature facsimile Puss in Boots is one such book and you can even read some of the words inside and see the coloured illustrations quite clearly.  I have quite a large representation of Ken Blythe’s work in my collection, others of which you can see sitting around him.  These include Beauty and the Beast illustrated by Water Crane from the 1880s, a 1920s copy of Jack and the Beanstalk illustrated by Flora White and a 1924 edition of Hansel and Gretel illustrated by Kay Nielsen.  What might amaze you even more is that all Ken Blythe’s books are authentically replicated 1:12 scale miniatures of real volumes.  To create something so authentic to the original in such detail and so clearly, really does make this a miniature artisan piece.  Ken Blythe’s work is highly sought after by miniaturists around the world today and command high prices at auction for such tiny pieces, particularly now that he is no longer alive.  I was fortunate enough to acquire pieces from Ken Blythe prior to his death about four years ago.  His legacy will live on with me and in my photography which I hope will please his daughter.  I hope that you enjoy this glimpse at just one of hundreds of his books that I own, and that it makes you smile with its sheer whimsy!
