Lady Banks Plucks a Rose - a photo on Flickriver

            Spring has finally sprung where I live, and there have been some lovely, mild and sunny days over the last few weeks, so I have taken advantage of the good weather when I can, and have gone for a few afternoon strolls.  On one such walk, I chanced upon this beautiful bower of buttery yellow Lady Banks' Roses, which is thriving in what was once the well maintained garden, but now a much neglected one, of a stylish red brick Art Deco villa.  The flowers are so tiny and delicate, and have always been a favourite of mine, as they remind me of my Grandparents, who had a large Lady Banks' Rose in the garden of my childhood home.  Many decades after I picked them and pressed them, I still have Lady Banks' Rose blooms in some of my children's books, and whilst more mellow golden now, they still retain their yellow hue.

Rosa banksiae, common names Lady Banks' rose, or just Banks' rose, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family, native to central and western China, in the provinces of Gansu, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Sichuan and Yunnan.  The rose is named for Dorothea Lady Banks, the wife of the botanist Sir Joseph Banks. Rosa banksiae has likely been grown in the gardens of China for hundreds of years. The species was introduced to Europe by William Kerr, who had been sent on a plant-hunting expedition by Sir Joseph Banks. He bought the first Lady Banks' Rose, subsequently named the white Lady Banks from the famous Fa Tee nursery in 1807.
