On The Bay

            The Bay of Bengal that is. This is the first of my new albums in my new collection of travel memories. Many of the images have been reworked or have never been posted. 

This image in so many ways depicts my philosophy of travelling. Try to get to places right after they are deemed safe for travel and before the crowds come. Taken on Ngapali Beach in Myanmar right after the monks protested in Yangon against the military regime and the country was starting to see major changes.

 A side story to accompany this scene is  when I booked my hotels for this trip I looked at places on the beach which were similar to places I had stayed in Phuket Thailand in the 1980's. Silly me!! I had aged and now enjoyed more creature comforts. 

When the kind man behind the desk was checking me into the back packers haven, that I had booked, he astutely noticed how uncomfortable I looked. He asked me if I really wanted to stay in such a sparse place. I replied that I used to enjoy such places but wondered if I could get by with no air conditioning. He understood and said that he would check and see if a more upscale place on the beach had rooms. He booked me in the other hotel which thankfully took credit cards and even drove me to the new hotel on the Bay of Bengal where this image was taken at sunset. 

I spent four blissful days here where crowds were small and more locals were on the beach than tourists.
