I've been visiting the Norfolk Broads pretty much every year for the last 35 years but this is the first time I've ever seen a police boat parked up somewhere!

Moored up on the Hoveton side of the River Bure in the Norfolk Broads was Norfolk Constabulary's police launch that is used to patrol the Broads and give a reassuring police presence on the area's waterways.

With the very apt Broads Authority registration '999 B' the vessel is fully marked and blue light-equipped and belongs to the force's Marine Unit, known as 'Broads Beat'. It is stationed at Hoveton Police Station (just a couple of hundred yards away from this very spot), providing cover for over 125 miles of broadland waterways.

Although there has historically been a police presence on the Norfolk Broads going back as far as the 1930s it was always an informal arrangement with boats being drafted in from elsewhere in the county. 

Broads Beat was created in 1995 and is run on a sponsorship basis with local businesses providing funding for everything other than the officer's salaries. The scheme has been a huge success and it is now the UK’s longest running Police and Public Sponsorship Scheme.

I took this shot next to the bridge that crosses the River Bure. On one side of the bridge is Hoveton and on the opposite side is Wroxham. However, most people (locals aside) presume that the whole area is Wroxham.

Having the 'Roys of Wroxham' complex of shops on the Hoveton side of the river probably doesn't help matters. With Roys having been there since 1899 I can't see it changing the name any time soon!
