1919 Indian 1000 Motorcycle in Mitchell, Ontario 1920

            This Indian Motorcycle belonged to one of the 3 McCarthy Brothers from Stratford, Ontario. Thomas 1873, Frederick 1881, and William 1883 were all strong athletic competitors in Cycling at the turn of the century. Frederick went on to compete in the 1908 Olympics in London winning a Bronze for Canada in cycling. William operated an Indian Motorcycle sales and service shop in Stratford along with support and help from his brothers. He continued to repair bikes all his life in his home town. This photo was taken in Mitchell Ontario a small village about 20 kilometers west of Stratford. At the time of this photo the main highway now #7 was not yet paved as is evident by the mud on this nearly new Indian Motorcycle. Note the lady sitting in the side car in full warm dress and the high cut boots on the driver who has stopped for a smoke.
