Looking Up the Line - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the West Coast Main Line looking south from the old Crewe Signal box in to Crewe Station. This is the Grand Junction, the reason Crewe exists at all. Before the railway, Crewe Green was a small settlement a mile or two away from the town centre is now,  in the 1830's a number of railways being built converged on the spot. Lines built from Warrington, Manchester, Chester, Derby and Birmingham all were planned to meet here, becoming the Grand Junction. A railway works was built here and a railway colony grew around it becoming the town of Crewe....a railway new town.
