Hunslet 5238 of 1957 (Ex NCB) Shunter No DL 26 at Didcot 08 06 2005

            Preserved DL 26 sits at the Didcot Railway Museum awaiting its next shunting duties.

It is pretending to be a BR loco, but was always an industrial shunter 😊.

Until the Great Western Society bought 08604, this was the main shunter at the DRC.

Built by Hunslet, Leeds in 1957 (Works No. 5238), it was one of a batch of 4 Hunslet 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunters built with a National 264hp engine. Hunslet mainly used Gardner 204hp Hunslet mainly used.

Delivered to the National Coal Board (NCB) with 5239/1957, it became DL 26 at one of the collieries in December 1968 (no NCB number known before that).

It was bought by GWS in 1978 and painted into BR Black to mimic the Class 05's it looks very similar to.

The BR Lion Roundel logo is just another bit of mimic fun 😊.

It had been recently repainted when I saw it in 2005 and has had a full repaint again in 2023.

It is now (2024) used as a shunting back up to 08604.
