Unicorn of the Nordmarka - a photo on Flickriver

            This beautiful white pony is the resident greeter at Ullevålseter, one of the many, remarkable trailside retreats in the forests around Oslo.  These are some of my favorite aspects of life in Norway.  You can just be hiking (or skiing, in winter) along, several miles outside of the city, far from civilization, and then the trail opens up into a clearing and you stumble upon a bright red farmhouse surrounded by picnic tables, with a warm lodge/bar on the inside, and you can get yourself a nice coffee and waffle, or beer and hot dog, or whatever you like to tide you over until you continue on with your trek.  This particular stop is at about the halfway point of one of my favorite ten-mile hikes in the Oslo area, from Frognerseteren (the end of metro line 1) to Sognsvann (the end of metro line 6).  And this little white friend waiting to say hello makes it just that much more special.
