When a hospital ship strikes a mine during the Second World War, the only survivors are Lieutenant Elizabeth Smythe (Linda Darnell) and Corporal Michael Dugan (Tab Hunter), who become marooned on an island in the South Pacific, where they slowly bond. Their relationship is complicated by the arrival of William Peck (Donald Gray), a survivor of a plane crash.

The British-American film (aka "Island of Desire"), based on a 1935 novel by Hugh Brooke, was to start filming in Jamaica on July 1, 1951, with actor Donald Gray signed to play Michael Dugan. However, that role eventually went to Tab Hunter, a relative unknown, who was asked to test for the film’s director, Stuart Heisler. Heisler asked Hunter to take off his shirt. Tab Hunter's acting in this film is painful to watch. It took a lot of training and experience at Warner Bros. to raise his game, and raise it he did in such films as "Battle Cry" (1955) and "Damn Yankees" (1958).
