Spaceship Endurance in the film “Interstellar” (Paramount, 2014) approaches a wormhole that will allow it to travel to a distant part of the universe.

            To find a new home and escape a catastrophic famine on Earth, humanity needs to find a habitable planet elsewhere in the universe – and the only way to get elsewhere fast is through a wormhole.  To come up with the film’s representation of the wormhole, the visual effects team relied on the film’s Science Advisor, Nobel Laureate and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne.  “The entrance is a shimmering sphere – just as it likely would look in real life,” Thorne said.  A gravitational distorted view of space on the other side can be seen on the sphere’s surface.  The wormhole is 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) in diameter and serves as a shortcut to another galaxy billions of lightyears away.
