Il biancospino comune (Crataegus monogyna Jacq., 1775) è un arbusto o un piccolo albero molto ramificato e dotato di spine, appartenente alla famiglia delle Rosaceae.

La pianta può raggiungere altezze comprese tra i 50 centimetri ed i 6 metri. Il fusto è ricoperto da una corteccia compatta e di colore grigio. I rami giovani sono dotati di spine che si sviluppano alla base dei rametti brevi.

I fiori sono raggruppati in corimbi, che ne contengono circa 5-25. I petali sono di colore bianco-rosato e lunghi 5 o 6 millimetri.

I frutti sono ovali, rossi a maturazione e con un nocciolo che contiene il seme. La fioritura avviene tipicamente tra aprile e maggio, mentre i frutti maturano fra novembre e dicembre. I frutti del biancospino sono edibili, ma solitamente non vengono mangiati freschi, bensì lavorati per ottenere marmellate, gelatine o sciroppi.
Sono questi frutti rossi "le brocche dei biancospini" a cui Giovanni Pascoli fa riferimento nella sua poesia "Valentino" del 1903.

Oh! Valentino vestito di nuovo,
come le brocche dei biancospini!
Solo, ai piedini provati dal rovo
porti la pelle de’ tuoi piedini;
porti le scarpe che mamma ti fece,
che non mutasti mai da quel dì,
che non costarono un picciolo: in vece
costa il vestito che ti cucì. 
Costa; ché mamma già tutto ci spese
quel tintinnante salvadanaio:
ora esso è vuoto; e cantò più d’un mese
per riempirlo, tutto il pollaio.

Poi, le galline chiocciarono, e venne
marzo, e tu, magro contadinello,
restasti a mezzo, così con le penne,
ma nudi i piedi, come un uccello:
come l’uccello venuto dal mare,
che tra il ciliegio salta, e non sa
ch’oltre il beccare, il cantare, l’amare,
ci sia qualch’altra felicità
