The Stars are Out

            Motukiekie Beach is a wild and spectacular location just north of Greymouth on New Zealand’s West Coast.

This amazing starfish colony is situated right next to a set of dramatic sea stacks forming a truly out of this world photographic combination.

The trick to this location however is the tide.  The guide books state that if it aint low you can’t go and they are not kidding.  This area of the beach is quite flat so the 3 metre tide variations make a huge difference to access.  This starfish colony is really only accessible for 30 minutes or so either side of low tide, and even on a very low tide I still had to contend with some swells that swept over the entire area of rocks, threatening to knock me over with them!  This made for a dramatic and rewarding shoot.

I had to plan this shoot well in advance to ensure that the one day I had allotted to the area coincided with the low tide occurring at both sunset and sunrise.  This was a sunset shot. 

The amazing thing about New Zealand is the diversity and concentrated nature of the various locations.  On this particular day I caught a cracker of a sunrise at Kaikoura on the east coast then drove through pouring rain to catch this sunset on the west coast!
