This is what has become of our heritage?

            A view down the Trent and Mersey canal towards Middleport in Stoke-on-Trent.
This sad scene of neglect shows the former Goodwin's Mill Co. calcining mill (the rectangular calcining kiln is hidden from view in this shot) on the corner of Milvale Street (formerly Bridge Street) and Pidduck Street which spans the canal. Believe it or not this old piece of industrial architecture is grade II listed but is being allowed to decay year after year. This old mill dates back to the early nineteenth century with many additions down the years. You can just make out the jib which was used to load narrowboats with their cargo for shipping to the local pottery works.
The far building is the old Port Vale flour mill of Fitton & Pidduck.
This works was used in the process of calcining (firing in a kiln) flint which was then ground to be used as an additive in clays and the ceramics industry.
