Government in London - a photo on Flickriver

            This three-frame panorama looks from about the middle of Westminster Bridge over Westminster Millennium Pier to a line of mainly government offices running along  Victoria Embankment.

The pier was one of five opened on the lower Thames in 2000 as part of a regeneration strategy for  the River Thames.

Beyond, the buildings are, from left to right: Portcullis House; Norman Shaw South and North Buildings; New Scotland Yard; the Ministry of Defence (white with green roofs; and finally, the spiked roof of Whitehall Court.

Portcullis House, completed in 2001, accommodates the offices of about one-third of the Members of Parliament; other Members and Parliamentary departments have offices in the two adjacent Norman Shaw Buildings (formerly known as Scotland Yard). The North Building was completed in 1890 and the South Building in 1906. The police left the buildings in 1967 and they were refurbished between 1973 and 1976 as the offices for 128 MPs, along with a few other parliamentary functions (a TV studio, for example).

New Scotland Yard (then called the Curtis Green Building) was completed in 1940 to allow expansion of the police functions in the area. In 2013 it became the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police and in 2016 was renamed as New Scotland Yard, the old one on the corner of Broadway and Victoria Street having been sold off.

The Ministry of Defence Main Building was designed in 1915 and built between 1939 and 1959. It sits atop the site of the original Palace of Westminster which was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1698.

Whitehall Court is one contiguous building but consists of two separate constructions. The south end was designed by Thomas Archer and A Green and constructed as a block of luxury residential apartments in 1884 while the north end, occupied by the National Liberal Club, was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1887. The building served as the headquarters of MI6 (the Secret Intelligence Service) during the First World War when it was led by the original 'C', Mansfield Smith-Cumming.
