billabong in narbethong country - a photo on Flickriver

            impressions of a billabong on the Narbethong road, in the middle of nowhere, which is also the back way via a dirt road to Yalleroi, off the Matilda (also called Landsborough) Highway, should you ever wish to visit the small town and take the shortcut travelling from Barcaldine way.

Billabong (not the Australian surf clothing company) (pron.: /ˈbɪləbɒŋ/, BIL-ə-bong) is an Australian English word meaning a small lake, specifically an oxbow lake, a section of still water adjacent to a river, cut off by a change in the watercourse. Billabongs are usually formed when the path of a creek or river changes, leaving the former branch with a dead end. Billabongs, reflecting the arid Australian climate in which these "dead rivers" are found, fill with water seasonally and are dry for a greater part of the year. (Source: Wikipedia)

While this watercourse is not strictly a billabong (in the technical scientific sense), it acts like one as it has been incredibly dry over the past 6 months.
