LITTLE BITTERN // IXOBRYCHUS MINUTUS (36cm)

RAREST  FIND, a rapid gak-gak-gak-gak  when disturbed, but you try and see it, it walks under tightly knitted mangrove roots,  and is very secretive, the  best chance to see one, is if it climbs up to fly to a different area. And this was our chance, which we took well, with a element of luck, as we did meet somebody so intent of photographing  one he sat with a Gambian Guide for more than two days, and only then got a partial  capture of one!
We did not use a Guide, as we are very experienced in this area,  A diminutive bittern with a large creamy patches, and a black crown and back flight feathers. Not the very best image, but one we will treasure for a long time to come.
