Burg Maus

            Burg Maus - Maus Castle. Construction of the castle was begun in 1356 by Archbishop-Elector of Trier Bohemond II and was continued for the next 30 years by successive Electors of Trier. Burg Maus was to enforce Trier's recently acquired Rhine River toll rights and to secure Trier's borders against the Counts of Katzenelnbogen (who had built Burg Katz on the right bank of the Rhine and Burg Rheinfels on the left bank). In the latter half of the 14th century Burg Maus was one of the residences of the Elector of Trier. Unlike its two neighboring castles, Burg Maus was never destroyed, though it fell into disrepair in the 16th and 17th centuries.

"Wellmich (Adler), with a small Gothic church, is commanded by the castle of Thurnburg, or Deurenburg. This stronghold, completed in 1363 by Archbishop Kuno von Falkenstein, was derisively call Mouse (Maus) by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in contradiction to their "Cat'. It has been rebuilt by its present owner and commands a fine view".--Baedeker 1911
