BMW R100RS in San Pedro - a photo on Flickriver

            At Point Fermin Park. Two of my friends, both former colleagues and fellow retirees discuss details of this beautiful BMW motorcycle. My friend wearing the leather jacket found this BMW advertised out of state, brought it home and did a near ground-up restoration, including the engine.

It started from a book I bought perhaps 30 years ago at a book sale at the Fullerton (California) Public Library. The book was about superbike motorcycles and it had a color photo of a BMW R100RS on its jacket. The hardcover was beginning to disintegrate but I couldn't pass up the price, I think about 25 cents! 

Perhaps 15 years ago, I brought the book to my workplace in order to give to another of my friends. However, he returned it to me a couple of years later (how often does THAT happen?) So it languished on top of a file cabinet I had at my desk. But some time in 2019 I decided to dispose of the now deteriorated book. But instead of discarding it, I walked it upstairs to my friend Greg, one of the Civil Engineers at our plant knowing that he was also a BMW motorcycle owner. He gladly accepted the book.

Greg had already decided to retire early in 2020 and did so, pretty much coincident with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. With extra time afforded by his retirement and that few places were open to visit, he decided to acquire a used BMW R100RS and then restore it to look like the one on the cover of the old book I gave him! 

He did a fantastic job! It's done extremely well that it stands up to very close scrutiny.
