The Eagle-Eyed Scotsman - a photo on Flickriver

            December 1983. I can remember why I took this Polaroid photo - it was so that a portrait illustration of the man could be produced. He was going to retire at the end of the year.

His name was John Ferguson and he spoke with a definite Scottish accent. Naturally, no one knew him as ‘John’ except perhaps the payroll department. People simply called him 'Scotty' instead of John.

Scotty worked within our plant's Contract Administration group. It was his job to visit contractor jobsites in the field everyday to check on contractors working construction projects. At each, he would make sure that the personnel and resources were appropriate for the job and that individual time sheets matched the amount of work for which we would ultimately be billed.

He was meticulous at his job.

One of the senior engineers in our group once described Scotty's keen ability to detect the slightest anomalies in this way: "That Scotty can spot a speck of fly sh*t in a pile of pepper!" :-)

We need many more people like Scotty in the world today, just to make sure that we as payers aren’t cheated or our money isn’t wasted.
