Just in Time. Striped Hoverfly, Helophilus pendulus, on Geranium yesoense, Hokkaido Geranium, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

            The Summer Sun here is really hot, and many flowers soon wilt. Our Geranium is on the verge of eternity but just in time Striped Hoverfly is lapping up some pollen. Look at that eager tongue!
This Geranium was first described by Adrien René Franchet (1834-1900) in 1878 on the basis of its collection by one of those intrepid versatile French botanists, Paul Amadée Ludovic Savatier (1830-1891). Trained as a medical doctor Savatier joined the French Navy. In the early 1860s the French were called upon in the context of the 'opening up' of Japan to help organise the Japanese fleet. Savatier worked in Japan from 1866-1876 as a doctor stationed in the harbor and naval city Yokosuka in central Japan. He helped build a medical infrastructure - including the corporeal care of local prostitutes and their clients. But his heart was in botany and he traveled far and near collecting plants. These he sent to Franchet, who catalogued and studied them as he did those brought him by many other great French expeditions. 
Savatier found this Geranium in the vicinity of Hakodate in the south of what is today called Hokkaido. For a time in the late nineteenth century Hokkaido was an independent country which went under the name of Yezo or Edo (and variations) until the name Hokkaido was given it in 1869. Hence the Latin: 'yesoense' as the specific of this Geranium.
Savatier later served France in the Pacific notably on Tahiti.
