As can be seen, we are now in the domain of alchemy, where “the Stone” is the famous Philosophers’ Stone, capable of transmuting lead into gold. Yet the meaning remains the same. The first famous alchemist, Zosimos of Panopolis (c. 300 AD) as well as others, made it clear that the alchemical quest was primarily spiritual in nature.

The final goal of the alchemical work (also called the “Great Work” or “Red Work”) is the Red Stone or Elixir (of Immortality), also called “drinkable gold.” This refers to the Philosophers’ Stone and its liquid form.  (The color red represents energy and activity.)
