Even for the early 1990s this was a special sports car design.  It was nicknamed 'Il Mostro', the monster.  Nevertheless the restricted production of 1.036 cars was sold out at once.  The Alfa-Romeo is one of the first CAD-designed cars.  The first sketches were drawn by Robert Opron, a designer who worked for Fiat, the company that owns Alfa-Romeo.  Opron had made a name for himself with the Citroën SM and CX.  Design studio Zagato was only indirectly involved, but because of their long standing with Alfa and because they also produced the car, the ES-30 prototype was renamed SZ (Sprint Zagato).  The 3,0 litre, 6-cylinder engine as borrowed from the Alfa 75.  In 1992 the RZ roadster version came next.
