Ford Taunus Transit FK1000 "Den Minerv'Oil" - 1964

In the wake of World War II, there was a huge demand in Europe for smaller trucks and vans. To meet this demand, the Cologne-based Ford plants built several types of lighter trucks in the early 1950s. In each case, this was done under the type names FK 2000, FK 3000,… .

In 1953, the FF 1000 and the FK 1500 were launched (FK stands for Ford Köln, the number indicates the payload in kilograms). The biggest competitor was VW, which had just released the hugely popular T1, but in addition, the DKW F89L Schnellaster and the Vidal & Sohn Tempo Matador were also formidable ‘rivals’. The 1.2-litre four-cylinder in-line engine was given a hard time and all too often it happened that these vehicles were overloaded. An additional problem was that no adequate remedy had yet been found against the rusting of the low-quality, post-war steel. Immediately you know the reason why very few examples of these lighter trucks can still be found.

It wasn’t long before Ford Cologne decided to equip the models with a heavier 1.5-litre engine. This ‘workhorse’ was launched in 1961 under the name Ford Taunus Transit. Its production would last until 1965.

The Mahy family’s example was purchased new in 1964 by the Brussels firm ‘Huileries Taes’. This company imported and distributed Minerv’Oil in the Benelux. Interesting to note in the margin is that an authentic price list of the oils, dated September 1970, was found in the glove compartment.

‘Huileries Taes’ had several such vans in service. This FK 1000 was the last in that series and was replaced by the much more modern, new Ford Transit in 1973 after years of loyal service. The Mahy family was contacted asking if they were not interested in this vehicle. We know the result: barely a few hours later, it was safely parked among numerous peers in the Circus Building.
