Macro Mondays #Glass
Size of the Moldavite: 2,8 x 2 cm / 1,1 x 0,7 inches
And we know who wins, don't we? Our favourite "grumpies" are always a go-to when it comes to heckling anyone into oblivion, aren't they?
Some of you may recall a similar looking piece of glass from an earlier MM theme: a moldavite I had set as a ring which I had chosen for "Souvenir" (please see first comment). This is another, bigger moldavite, one that would be nice as a pendant, but I like to keep it in my pocket as a "worry stone" or good luck charm (pretty esoteric, isn't it?).
Moldavites, formerly known as "glass meteorites", are a green tektite variety. They were formed by a huge meteorite impact which ocurred about 15 million years ago in the Nördlinger Ries area of Southern Germany. The chemical formula is SiO2(+Al2O3) (Wikipedia). The "Ries impact" was so strong, that the meteorite melted, and merged with Earth particles. This melted and merged material was blown as far as 250 to 450 kilometres (between 155 and 279 miles), before it cooled off and solidified to pieces of green glass. 99 percent of all Moldavites are found in Southern Bohemia.
I thought that this piece of "cosmic glass" would look best backlit. I tried different ways of backlighting, none of which I was particularly happy with, the lights were in the way, too big, visible in the image, until, rather late last evening, it "clicked". I used a small flash light and placed it right behind the moldavite. There were no other lightsources, and it was already dark outside. This worked really well and brought out the moldavite's strange textures / structures in, I think, a really beautiful way. The flashlight still wasn't small enough, so the edges are rather blown out (and I had forgotten to take off the star filter), but I still somehow like the effect. However I guess I will get myself a smaller flashlight for future backlit macros ;-) Shot with in-camera focus stacking and processed in Luminar. All in all I'm very happy how this turned out.

So ein "kosmisches Glas", einen Moldavit, hatte ich schon einmal für ein MM-Thema ("Souvenir") verwendet. Damals war es ein kleinerer Stein, den ich mir mal als Ring hatte fassen lassen (bitte im ersten Kommentar nachschauen). Dieser Stein ist etwas größer, er würde sich sicher gut als Anhänger machen, aber ich verwende ihn gerne als Handschmeichler. Moldavite, früher als "Glas-Meteorite" bekannt, gehören zu den Tektiten und sind Produkte starker Meteoriteneinschläge. Im Falle der Moldavite war dies das "Ries-Ereignis", ein schwerer Meteoriteneinschlag vor ca. 15 Millionen Jahren im süddeutschen Nördlinger Ries. Der Aufprall war so heftig, dass der Meteorit mit Erdgestein verschmolz und zu Glas
erstarrte. Die Partikel wurden zwischen 250 und 450 Kilometer weit geschleudert, das Hauptfundgebiet für Moldavite ist Südböhmen.
Den Moldavit richtig gut von hinten zu beleuchten, um damit seine schöne grüne Färbung und die bizarren Strukturen optimal zur Geltung zu bringen, war mal wieder gar nicht so leicht, jedenfalls zuerst nicht. Mal waren die Lampen im Weg, mal nicht optimal platziert und der Stein zu dunkel, mal waren sie mit auf dem Bild. Erst der Trick mit der Taschenlampe, direkt hinter dem Moldavit platziert, brachte das gewünschte Ergebnis. Da war es draußen schon dunkel, andere Lichtquellen als die Taschenlampe habe ich nicht verwendet. Die Lampe ist ein bisschen zu groß (und ich hatte mal wieder vergessen, den Sternfilter abzuschrauben), aber irgendwie mag ich den leicht überstrahlten Effekt (werde mir allerdings für künftige Makros noch einen kleinere Lampe zulegen). Ich habe wieder das Kamera-interne Focus Stacking verwendet; entwickelt habe ich das Ganze überwiegend in Luminar.
Zurzeit habe ich recht viel zu tun, komme also nicht so intensiv zum Fotosschauen und Kommentieren, wie ich gerne möchte. Ich hoffe, dass ich bald wieder mehr Zeit für Eure schönen Bilder haben werde ;-)
