SIRIUS sails.

            SIRIUS sails into Sydney.

Taking its name from the HMS SIRIUS which served as the flagship of the First Fleet the name of the famous flagship SIRIUS. 

Delivered between 1984-1986 Sirius is one of 9 catarmaran vessels in the aptly named First Fleet class of ferries.

All vessels in the First Fleet class are designated as passenger vessels with SIRIUS having a gross tonnage of 186t with an overall length of 25.38m and breadth of 10.04m the vessel was manufactured in in 1984 at Carrington Slipways,Tomago.

Due to its storage capacity HMS SIRIUS served as the flagship of the First Fleet was designated as a storeship but it was also armed with 20 guns.

Consisting a compliment of 136 seamen, marines and officers the overloaded ship proved difficult to sail as the vessel carried four boats and its cargo also included livestock, plants of many and varied species and a piano which belonged to the ship’s surgeon. 

No doubt he intended to bring culture to the new colony.  
Due to a shortage of supplies in the new colony HMS Sirius departed Sydney in October 1788 to re-visit the Cape of Good Hope to obtain stores to resupply to meet the now desperate needs of the colony.

SIRIUS would make a visit to Norfolk Island to provide provisions to the colony that had been established but at midday on 19th March 1790 a strong wind suddenly blew and the strong winds forced the ship backwards onto a reef but by that time too much damage had occurred and HMS SIRIUS slid below the water’s surface.

HMS SIRIUS was built at Rotherhithe, UK in 1780 as the Berwick for the East India trade route however the vessel was badly burnt in a fire and was eventually sold to the Royal Navy who rebuilt the vessel in 1786 with an increased displacement from the original 540t to 612t and 20 guns.

Originally it had 10 cannons however Arthur Phillip increased this to 20 guns for the First Fleet voyage.

HMS SIRIUS had a length of 110ft 5in (33.7m) and a width of 32ft 9in (9.98m) and a depth of hold 13ft (4m).
