Hotel Del Coronado - R. H. Dana Place & Orange Avenue - back entrance

This is the R.H. Dana Place and Orange Avenue entrance to The Del.
The Del has built the parking garage on R. H. Dana Place by Orange Avenue. Almost everyone now enters from the parking garage through the "back entrance".

Flickr friends know that for me it is not just the photo, but also the story behind the photo. R. H. Dana (Richard Henry Dana) was one of my favorite authors when I was young. I wonder how many millions of people walk by this street without wondering for whom it was named.

Richard Henry Dana, for whom the street is named, came to San Diego in the early eighteen hundreds, long before the idea of the Hotel Del Coronado even existed. Son of a well-to-do family in Cambridge MA, he attended Harvard at an early age, but was forced to give up his studies when his eyesight, worsened from measles, prohibited him from reading. In search of a new life, he left the comforts of his heritage behind, and signed aboard a trading ship, the Pilgrim, bound for California. as a common seaman. His experience was chronicled in his book, Two Years Before the Mast. While in California he worked along the coast. Dana Point is named after him. Much time was spent in San Diego’s Old Town, and at Point Loma. While at sea he observed the abysmal treatment of sailors, and lived along side them in their harsh conditions.

Hilton Hotels now manages Hotel Del Coronado as part of its Curio Collection. Hilton has invested significantly in long overdue improvements. I used some Hilton Rewards to upgrade our room.
