John Harrison: H1

            This model is inspired by John Harrison's H1 clock. The balls in the middle of the red and green rods are magnetic poles: their attraction guarantees the perfect synchronization of the two pendulums.

Questo modello si ispira all'orologio H1 di John Harrison. Le sfere in mezzo ai tiranti rosso e verde sono poli magnetici: la loro attrazione garantisce il movimento perfettamente sincrono dei due pendoli.

John Harrison nel '700 creò degli orologi veramente innovativi: erano estremamente precisi (non più di qualche secondo di errore al mese), e a differenza dei normali orologi a pendolo, potevano viaggiare per mare. Cosa che gli orologi a pendolo non potevano fare, in quanto i movimenti di rollio e beccheggio impediscono al pendolo di mantenere un movimento regolare. Il Harrison risolse questi problemi adottando due bilancieri che si muovevano in modo complementare l'uno rispetto all'altro: le forze agenti su uno dei due venivano automaticamente compensate dalle forze che agivano sull'altro, con uguale intensità ma con segno opposto.

Questo tipo di orologi ha permesso per la prima volta di risolvere un antichissimo problema della navigazione: la determinazione della longitudine.
