Canadian WW1 memorial - the "Brooding Soldier"

            The Canadian Memorial at St Julien, commonly known as The Brooding Soldier, stands at Vancouver Corner, 7 km NE of Ieper/Ypres. It marks the battlefield where 18,000 Canadians stood (and 2000 died) against the first German gas attacks, in the second battle of Ypres in April 1915.

Rising almost 11 metres from a stone-flagged court, “The Brooding Soldier” is formed from a single shaft of granite – the bowed head and shoulders of a Canadian soldier with folded hands resting on arms reversed – the traditional stance at a military funeral 

When the Canadian government decided to erect memorials in Europe to their war dead, they initiated a competition to find the most appropriate design . This one was actually the runner up, the winner being the much larger 30 metre high memorial at Vimy Ridge (near Arras, France)
