Severan Bridge

This ancient Roman bridge was built by the emperor Septimius Severus in c. 200 AD in the course of his Parthian campaign. The idea here was to enable legions from Samosata to cross the Cendere Stream on their way east. The stream itself is fairly shallow and easily fordable, so this was a question of ease rather than necessity. The bridge is 118 meters long, so it's fairly big and all a single span. The attribution of this bridge to Septimius can be shown from the inscriptions on the pillars. There were four of these, one each for Septimius, his wife Julia Domna, and his two sons Caracalla and Geta. Caracalla was a royal (or imperial) prick who hated his brother, so within a year of his father's death he had Geta murdered in his mother's arms and all depictions or dedications to him erased throughout the empire. Thus the fourth pillar was torn down, leaving us with a somewhat asymmetric bridge.

The bridge today is easy to access as it's just off the road connecting Kâhta to Sincik. It served its function as a bridge until surprisingly recently - it's only around 2010 that a modern bridge replaced it and the area was cut off from all but pedestrian traffic. The setting is pretty impressive - there's a great gorge on one side and a wide open plain on the other. Well worth stopping by for a quick visit.
